I'm finally back from London! The trip (which started on 28th July) was supposed to last for 7 days, but Leon and I were working so well and having such a nice time that just an hour before we were due to leave last Monday, we made the decision to extend the trip until Saturday. And what a good decision it turned out to be - we had a brilliant time and made the most of the extra few days!
Anyway, it's going to take a while for me to catch up with everything because I hadn't planned to stay away so long, so I won't write a long blog today but instead I just wanted to share a beautiful poem with you. I saw it on an Underground train on the way back to Fitzrovia from St Pancras International last Monday night. It's called After the Lunch by Wendy Cope.
After the Lunch
On Waterloo Bridge, where we said our goodbyes,
The weather conditions bring tears to my eyes.
I wipe them away with a black woolly glove
And try not to notice I've fallen in love.
On Waterloo Bridge I am trying to think:
This is nothing. You're high on the charm and the drink.
But the juke-box inside me is playing a song
That says something different. And when was it wrong?
On Waterloo Bridge with the wind in my hair
I am tempted to skip. You're a fool. I don't care.
The head does it's best but the heart is the boss -
I admit it before I am halfway across.
Wendy Cope (b.1945)
